Connected IoT devices reached an estimated 21.1 billion by the end of 2025, up 14% from 18.5 billion in 2024, according to IoT Analytics. Many of these devices run a Linux kernel, while Embedded Linux achieved 46% developer adoption in the Eclipse Foundation's 2024 survey, making it the most widely adopted platform ahead of every real-time operating system (RTOS).
